GreenPeace's latest electronics report still pegs Nokia in top spot, with Sony and LG Electronics making the best improvement this quarter.

Key improvements this quarter include (in order of green ranking):

  1. Nokia is recycling around 2% of its mobile phones but already has a good track record on policies and elimination of chemicals.

  2. Sony Ericsson have committed to removing BFRs in their products and substituting other dangerous chemicals; but they lost points for not reporting on mobile phone recycling.

  3. Dell are pretty good overall, expecially in the recycling & acceptance of responsibility space, but fail badly on BFR and PCV-free products.

  4. Lenovo have made radical changes in the time since the Greenpeace report was first released (15 months ago) - they started at the bottom of the pack but are now equal to Dell in third place.  Like Dell they still fall down on BFR & PVC-free products.

  5. LG Electronics has also climbed the ladder from second last place to fifth in the past 15 months.  This time it has improved mobile phone recycling and launched 3 models of BFR-free mobiles, but still lacks a comprehensive recycling program for all electronics.

  6. Sony is in sixth place, where it was previously last in June.  They have committed to remove PVCs and BFRs in all new mobiles by 2010 but already have chemical free VAIO laptops, walkmans, digital cameras and video cameras.

  7. Fujitsu-Siemans has some PCs which don't have BFRs but no timeline for chemical extinction in the rest of their products.

  8. Samsung fell 3 places this quarter due to no improvements, no BFR & PVC free products and a takeback program that covers limited countries & products.

  9. Motorola also fell 3 places because there is no committment to a specific chemical-free timeline or advise us which products are PVC-free.  But they do recycle over 3% across 57 countries.

  10. Toshiba is another who dropped 3 places simply from sitting on its laurels.

  11. Acer dropped 2 places and has good chemical management overall, but still fails in selling PVC and BFR-free products.

  12. Apple, who released a rebuke after the 3rd report, has slid backwards to 12th place this quarter - like Toshiba they haven't made improvements, where their competitors have.

  13. HP started in 6th place in the first release but have slid down to the unlucky number in this release.  They seem to have take a backstep in 'Individual Producer Responsibility' and they provide no timeline for PVC/BFR elimination.

  14. Panasonic, last in the electro-green bunch, still hasn't made any improvements and thus have slid down the chain steadily.  They do however provide a number of PVC-free products such as DVD and video players and manufacture halogen-free wiring boards for components. They have also previously set a 2011 timeline for PVC elimination, but a limited reduction timeline for BFRs.
