The national ACS/AIIA/Software QLD Green IT Taskforce has had a successful launch and implemented great progress in QLD, and we are now looking to expand into other states. The state for NSW is now looking for interested individuals, businesses and government parties. Your role could be as a contributor, vendor, sponsor, and/or stream lead.
The core goals of the taskforce are to develop awareness, share knowledge and enable adoption of Green IT practices in Australia.
For background on the Green IT Taskforce & SIG: In mid-late 2007 the Australian Computer Society (ACS) developed a report on the carbon emissions of ICT in Australia. It essentially confirmed what the global industry analysts (such as Gartner) have said i.e. IT’s own carbon emissions amount to around 2-5% of the total carbon emissions worldwide. So earlier this year the ACS and AIIA got together and a group was developed and led by Dr Paul Campbell for a national taskforce and SIG for green IT – they started out in QLD where Phillip Nyssen from Fujitsu has been a driving force and subsequently took on the national lead role.
The overall operating model can be found here.
The goal of the taskforce & SIG is to “to influence the strategic Green IT agenda and to drive thought leadership for the supply and demand of Green IT”. This is essentially achieved through three pillars:
- Awareness – participate in promoting, collaboration or influencing industry & govt.
- Knowledge - participate in generating and developing knowledge for technology, industry and lifecycle (i.e. cradle to cradle). Contribute to elements such as the website, the formal knowledgebase and focus groups.
- Adoption – championing/leading/innovating in areas such as best practices, case studies.
The group I am organising in a couple of weeks time will discuss these overall goals and functions, and then nominate stream leads and develop some initial actions for contributors. There is no formal expectation of participation in attending the first meeting so happy for people to come along and determine from the presentation & discussions whether they want to contribute further.
