Last week Samsung announced they had signed up to the Basel Action Network (BAN) e-Stewards program, joining a host of other major US based organisations such as Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Capitol One Financial Corporation.
In a statement the Samsung spokesperson and Senior Vice President for Samsung Electronics America, J.C. Ser, said "Samsung is honored to be the first electronics manufacturer recognized with the e-Stewards standard for rigorous recycling and e-waste materials management. This is a major validation of our efforts as we have responsibly recycled more than 20 million pounds of e-waste since the beginning of our Samsung Recycling Direct program in 2008 and plan to continue strengthening our commitment and leadership in this industry."
The e-Stewards Certification Program requires certifiers to adhere to a set of standards for responsible recycling and reuse that incorporate ISO 14001 environmental management systems (EMS), prohibition of toxic waste disposal in landfills and extensive protection to monitor recycling workers in all countries where they have operations.
The standard was launched in the United States on 15th April.
