The Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) has asked for feedback from the Australian IT industry on their proposed Green ICT Quick Wins, as part of their implementation review of the Gershon Report.

The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) has been enlisted to gain industry feedback on the quick wins by April 9 2009, which are:

High priority options

  • Black screens, or static screen savers instead of active screensavers.
  • Automatic shutdown of desktop and laptop fleet after hours.
  • Encourage agencies to implement initiatives to enable the measurement of power usage of ICT as a component of total power usage.

Medium priority options (in line with agency ICT refresh cycles)

  • Encourage agencies that are undertaking a desktop refresh to consider replacing personal computers with more energy efficient alternatives.
  • Replace inefficient monitors with more energy-efficient models at the end of their life cycle (e.g. replacement of CRT monitors with more energy efficient alternatives).
  • Encourage agencies that are undertaking a telephone refresh to consider technologies that optimise energy use efficiency and minimise duplication of handsets per employee (e.g. VoIP as an alternative to fixed voice handsets).
  • Encourage tools and practices to assist employees to reduce the number of printed pages per employee per month.
  • Introduce the mandatory inclusion of Green ICT requirements in all agencies ICT RFT documentation:
    • Require respondents to detail energy usage information for their proposed solution.
    • Require that respondents indicate whether they are a signatory to the National Packaging Covenant.

Longer term priorities

  • Identify case study examples – thin clients and virtualisation.
  • Identify energy efficiency standards.
  • Introduce a carbon calculator for meeting scheduling.

In addition to the Green ICT Quick Wins, the industry also has the opportunity to provide feedback on three related Gershon initiatives:

  1. Data Centre Working Group - Industry Consultation:  although this is now closed, this initiative provided an opportunity for industry to present & inform the government on data centre issues.
  2. Energy Consumption Tools & Strategies:  a call for information on tools, best practices, and change strategies to help government ICT with energy baselining, measurement & management.
  3. Teleworking: the Gershon review recommended the implementation of a whole of government teleworking policy, and like energy consumption they are looking for tools, best practices and policies.
