The Green Grid is a US-based consortium of information technology companies and professionals in the quest to improve power consumption usage in data centres.

Current Board Members of the Green Grid include Microsoft, AMD, APC, Dell, HP, IBM, Sun, VMWare, Intel, SprayCool and Rackable Systems.  They also have the world's largest IT business names on the contributors list including Cisco, Novell, Symantec and EMC.

The Green Grid have a hefty little membership fee to become a contributor - $25,000, or if your pocket money is a bit short for that you can choose a $5000 general membership.  However these companies, for the sake of improving their business Corporate Social Responsibility, can afford it.  And the IT industry overall will benefit.  Already they have had the US Department of Energy sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on energy efficiencies.

There is limited content on the website for non-members however they have published 3 whitepapers:

  • The Green Grid Opportunity - why and what are their objectives?

  • Guidelines for energy efficient data centres

  • Green Grid Metrics: Describing data centre power efficiency
