Computers Off Australia is a new campaign that launched on 30th June 2008, aimed at educating consumers and businesses on saving carbon dioxide emissions generated from latent energy use - for example from the thousands of PCs that are left on overnight or with no power management configuration.
The non-profit organisation has two separate initiatives:
|
1. |
A campaign designed to educate both consumers and businesses on reducing their energy use; |
| 2. |
A labelling program designed to easily identify and recognise those organisations commited to reducing their impact on the environment, through their Green IT initiatives. |
The labelling program is designed to provide government and corporates with a stepped program giving them both incremental cost savings, and reduced energy use:

The first level, green, is awarded to individuals and organisations that implement power management settings on computing devices, while level two (blue) is for virtualisation of both desktops and/or servers. The final level, gold, is for organisations that also purchase carbon offsets to compliment their energy efficiency standards.
As part of the education campaign, there are some great tools on the website currently, including:
- A CO2 and Power management Calculator
- Step-by-step information on how to configure power management on a Windows or Macintosh operating system
- Links to informative videos
A set of videos on the site include three "viral commercials" for Computers Off Australia. Check out the first of the videos (very funny!):
