thinclientQueen Margaret University (QMU), located in Edinburgh (Scotland), took the green IT issue head on by implementing large scale thin client computing in 2009.

Fraser Muir, Director of Information Services at QMU, said their environmental initiatives were about reducing energy use and reducing heat, with the end result of not having to install air conditioning on campus.

The leading benefits to QUT were a reduction in floor space as well as allowing the campus more freedom in their overall architectural design.

The thin client benefits to students were an increase in number of devices available to them, and the usual 'follow-me' technology service that any thin client computing environment provides.

The university too has seen benefits with around £1 million pounds in IT and plant equipment savings, and an estimated £50,000 pounds per annum in energy costs.  QUT also found, after winning an award for their implementation, it has helped the overall profile of the university as well as increased student interest in their campus.
